Deja vu 2 , a group exhibition which I curated in 2013 in Ariana gallery in Tehran. I have named the exhibition Deja vu 2( what’s on your mind ? ) I invited six Artists to show “ what’s on their mind ? ” and I participated as a video artist as well.
My work in this exhibition is about a girl whose name has been mentioned in the media plenty of times. Banaz Mahmoud was one of five daughters in a strictly-traditional Kurdish family that fled from Iraq to Great Britain. She grew up in London and was forced to enter an arranged marriage at the age of 16. With 19 she fell in love with another man and due to this she was murdered by her father, uncle and a group of family friends. When I watched a documentary about her in the BBC news Magazine, I decided to show her suffering – and working about topics like that is one of my responsibilities as an artist.
The video installations have been situated in corridor with three different rooms.
The first video showed a standing girl in real size in a very tight frame whilst the two videos in the second room displayed the same girl washing her hands and feet with obsession. The accompanying installations were made up of several scissors in the first and of some socks filled with rocks in the second space that were installed at the ceilings. Beside some dangling family photos with some choker close ups in the third room another video depicted the same girl running away in a narrow maze of alleys. Except for a baggage covered with blood and the girl’s voice telling the story of her murder through her father and brothers the last space was empty. The corridor’s exit was a completely dark, curved path emphasizing emptiness, pain and cruelty she experienced in her life.
